The objective of ACE II is to strengthen selected Eastern and Southern Africa higher education institutions to deliver quality postgraduate education and build collaborative research capacity in the regional priority areas.

On July 11, 2016 the World Bank and IUCEA had signed a grant agreement of $8 million to host the ACE II project. To fulfil its effectiveness conditions, IUCEA submitted a signed performance agreement for the project’s implementation as well as a financing agreement with the World Bank.

Other groups involved in the effective and efficient management of the project along with IUCEA and the World Bank include a Regional Steering Committee (for overall guidance), a National Steering Committee (for implementation support), and Center Leaders of the selected Africa Centers of Excellence, who will manage the newly established ACEs within their host institutions.

The 24 Africa Centers of Excellence (ACE) represent eight countries - Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia – and will be funded up to US$6 million over five years. ACE II will close in 2022.
